The soap around Unibet and The Lotto goes on and on. Today the Dutch police arrested the director of bookmaker Unibet at Schiphol Airport. This detention was made at the request of the French Government, which wants to prosecute the director of the Swedish company for violation of its law on gambling.
In the Netherlands Unibet is also under fire because it has continued to violate Dutch law. The European Commission thinks otherwise. The EC asked France a year ago to change its law in line with the rules of the European Union.
In both the Netherlands and France, gambling is in the hands of monopolists, in France, "Française de Jeux" and "PMU", and in the Netherlands, "Lotto" and "Holland Casino".
