The Croatian gambling boss, Ante Sapina, was sentenced in Bochum to five years in prison. This brings an end to one of the largest gambling scandals in Western European football. Sapina had earlier admitted that he was involved in bribing players and referees to influence the outcome of football matches.

According to Sapina, his activities earned him more than €2.3 million. He had previously received a prison sentence of 5 and a half years, three years ago, but the federal court overturned the decision and called for a retrial.

The fixed matches were in the Bundesliga as well as international competitions.
