Another Italian footballer has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the Italian betting scandal. This time it is Atalanta defender Andrea Masiello. The 26-year-old was arrested Monday on suspicion of manipulating matches in Serie A last season with Bari.
Besides Masiello, eight of his former teammates are part of the ongoing investigation.
The last nine of Bari's last season games are under the microscope, including the derby which resulted in a 2-0 defeat against Lecce. Bari had already been regulated, but Lecce secured safety through the victory in which Masiello scored an own goal. He is on suspicion of fraud and involvement in a criminal organization.
Masiello transferred to Bari last summer after three and half years at Atalanta. He had previously spent longer periods with Juventus and Genoa. The other players under investigation are Marco Esposito, Daniele Portanova, Antonio Bella Vista, Alessandro Parisi, Marco Rossi, Abdelkader Ghezzal, Nicola Belmonte and Simone Bentivoglio, however, they have not been arrested.
Since June last year a total of more than thirty (former) players and other stakeholders have been arrested in connection with the biggest betting scandal in Italian football history, including the former internationals Cristiano Doni and Giuseppe Signori.
