The European Association for Security and Integrity in Sport (ESSA) has expressed its admiration for the Europol report. The ESSA is ready to provide any support to the ongoing investigations, if the investigating parties so wish.
The members of the ESSA are mainly bookmakers and licensees, subject to the rules of gambling. They are not part of the criminal betting circuit. The betting industry has tried to combat match fixing and to restrict it to a minimum so as not to undermine the integrity of the sport.
It currently has a warning system, but also wants to improve communication with the administrative authorities. It also offers various programs to athletes to raise awareness of the problem.
The ESSA was established in 2005 to monitor unusual betting. The members of the institution are required to pass on any irregularity allowing collaboration with sporting regulators, who can intervene if necessary.
