Tottenham Hotspur's Andros Townsend has been punished for placing bets on matches in which he was involved. The 21-year-old player, who was on loan at Queens Park Rangers for the second half of last season, had already admitted to having violated FA Rule E8 (b) by the involvement of betting on league matches in which he participated.

Townsend was given a four-month suspension by the English Football Association, but as the commencement of the suspension will be back dated to May 23, the player will not miss the start of the new 2013/2014 season.

In addition to the suspension, Townsend will also face a fine of GBP 18,000. Townsend posted on his Twitter account to explain that he will not appeal against the sentence.

"After a personal interview with the FA, I fully accept the disciplinary action taken against me," said Townsend. "This is a regrettable experience from which I plan to come back stronger. I'm fully focused on my return to football."

Specific details about the matches in which Townsend placed bets were not disclosed.
